Chapter Thirteen

Riley finished dressing and headed downstairs, where he found the kitchen easily by following the scent of warm bread and the sound of soft music.

“Feeling refreshed?” Trace asked, coming in from the breakfast room.

Riley gave him a curious look. “How did you know I liked the occasional bubble bath?”

Trace smiled. “I saw you once at the motel.” He shrugged. “You were so into it. I figured it had to be your guilty pleasure.” He reached for and captured Riley’s hand. Trace brought it to his lips and kissed his fingertips before drawing Riley to him. “I really don’t mind that part of you, Rye.”

“My feminine side.” He rolled his eyes.

Trace stroked Riley’s cheek. “Why do you hate that part of yourself?”

“I had to keep it guarded growing up,” he said. “My family despised gays. My uncle or my brother would have beaten me to death.” Pain filled his gaze, and he looked away. “I left as soon as I could, and I haven’t been back.”

“I’m sorry you had to grow up hiding half of yourself, Rye,” Trace said softly. “But you can be whoever you are with me.”

Riley could feel Trace’s hurt for him as well as anger with his uncle and brother. His heart swelled with hope. He had known from the very beginning this was a man he could fall in love with if he let his guard down. Now he understood why. “What does your family think about you being gay?”

Trace shrugged. “They’ve accepted it, but I know they wish I wasn’t,” he admitted. “They worry for me sometimes, but they hope I’ll find someone who’ll make me happy.”

“Lucky you.”

“Are you hungry?”

“Yeah.” Riley smiled.

“I hope you like it.” Trace led the way to the breakfast room but stepped aside to allow Riley to go in ahead of him.

Riley’s breath lodged in his throat. The small room was bathed in candlelight, the wood shutters were open with a view into the backyard, and the table was well appointed. The colors were soft, and the flowers were a nice touch. Soft music floated on the air.

The whole scene took Riley’s breath away. He turned to look at Trace, who looked uncertain. “And you talk about my feminine side.”

Trace grinned. “Here.” He pulled out Riley’s chair. Riley sat down, and Trace poured him some wine.

“Thanks.” He took a sip and nodded. “This is good.”

“We have a salad first,” he said, giving Riley a teasing smile. “Then, lobster ravioli with an Italian bread and then dessert.”

Riley’s eyes lit up. “What’s for dessert?”

Trace laughed. “You’ll have to wait and see.” He set a plate of salad before Riley then sat down across from him.

“Trace, this really is romantic.” And it warmed his heart that Trace had gone to so much trouble for him.

“It was meant to be,” he said and dug into his salad. “So why’d you go into Psy medicine?” Trace asked.

“I wanted to help people.” He shrugged. “And you?”

Trace smiled. “Pretty much the same reason.”

“Where are your parents?” Riley asked.
